Understanding good Playbeat 4 pattern generation workflow in Ableton session view

I am trying to incorporate Playbeat 4 into a typical Ableton workflow for me. The workflow starts with finding an interesting pattern and then if a song idea starts developing, quickly creating some variations which may lend themselves to verses, chorus’s, intro’s and outro’s. These variations would live in ableton session clips on a given track. The goal is to play these patterns with the playbeat sounds and not some other external midi device.

Does PLaybeat even respond to incoming midi events?

I began by finding a nice starting pattern in Playbeat GUI and as soon as I wanted to create the first variation, I got stuck.

  1. I saved the pattern to a key on remix keyboard. How do I name it so i can remember what its intent was?
  2. How do I then use this pattern in ableton. Of course the pattern plays when the transport in ableton starts, but how do I create a clip with this unique pattern? Do I just have the clip play the midi note associated with the remix key?
  3. If I create a variation and store it on another key, how do I reference this variation on another clip of the same track in ableton? Just insert the midi note for the new remix key?
  4. It does not look like the 24 remix keys store the sounds on a given pattern, so how can I change snare sound for a verse pattern and still have chorus snare sound/pattern available via remix keys?
  5. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Mitch
