Hi,

I am having a problem with Soundbox 1.3.5 where the audio will sometimes suddenly stop / mute itself after playing for a while.

At first I thought it might be related to REAPER, but I can reproduce the same problem in the Soundbox Standalone application, so it does not appear to be DAW-specific.

I am using a custom Soundbox guitar pack/preset that I created myself (“Jon Bends the Rules”). It contains multiple velocity layers and a separate bend layer made from WAV samples.

When the problem happens:

- Soundbox is still running
- MIDI/keyboard input still appears to work
- The interface is still responsive
- Audio suddenly disappears or Soundbox starts lagging badly
- No track mute is being activated in the DAW
- The same behaviour can occur in Standalone

Soundbox version: 1.3.5
OS: Ubuntu Studio 26.04.1 LTS / Linux
Audio: PipeWire

The samples are WAV files and the instrument otherwise loads and plays normally.

Is there a known issue in Soundbox where a custom pack/sample layer can cause the audio engine to stop producing sound?

Also, is there a log file or debug output I can check when this happens? If needed, I can provide the Soundbox pack, a screen recording, sample information or additional system details for testing.

Thanks!
Jon / Fuimadane

The pack is publicly available here, in case you would like to test the exact same files/preset:

Hi @jon_skarin ,

Thanks for reaching out!

First of all, congratulations on the awesome-sounding pack.

Since this isn’t something other users have reported, we’d like to learn a bit more about your setup. Is this issue only occurring on Linux? Also, are your libraries stored on an external drive? Have you also tried to adjust the buffer options through the settings tab?

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply, and thank you for the kind words about the pack! :)

Here is some more detailed information about my setup and the issue.

My setup:
- Ubuntu Studio 26.04.1 LTS
- Linux / X11
- PipeWire audio
- Soundbox 1.3.5
- The library is stored on my internal drive under my home directory, not on an external drive

I can reproduce the issue both in Soundbox Standalone and in plugin mode.

I have tested the following plugin formats:
- VST3
- CLAP
- LV2

The same basic problem occurs in all three formats.

Behaviour:
- In Standalone, the audio suddenly disappears completely, but the interface remains responsive
- MIDI input still appears to work
- In plugin mode inside the DAW, the audio also disappears, and Soundbox starts to lag
- CLAP seems to lag slightly more than VST3
- LV2 shows the same general behaviour
- No DAW track mute is being activated
- Changing to another preset inside Soundbox immediately restores the audio

I also tested the Preload Buffers setting in Standalone.

Results:
- Preload Buffers 16: audio disappears
- Preload Buffers 32: audio disappears
- Preload Buffers 64: audio disappears

So changing the Preload Buffers does not seem to solve the problem.

My other caching settings are currently:
- Read Cache: 2048 MB
- Threads: 1

To clarify one thing from my original description: in Standalone it does not really lag when the issue happens — the audio simply disappears. The lagging behaviour mainly appears in plugin mode after the audio has dropped out.

The fact that changing preset immediately restores the audio makes me wonder if something inside Soundbox's preset/sample playback engine is getting stuck, for example voice handling, a sample layer, or some internal playback state.

Thanks for the detailed information.

We’re fairly sure this is a Linux-related issue, and we’ll take a closer look to identify the cause and correct it. Thanks for your patience and for helping us track this down.
